Blogging tips & www social trends
28 Mar
There’s an interesting post by Daniel at DailyBlogTips.com on the opportunity to use post excerpts on the homepage instead of full posts.
As you may know, this blog has always used post excerpts, and I’d like to point out the reasons behind this, and to talk with you about this issue.
The main advantages reported by Daniel are
In my opinion for most blog the number 3 is the most important one: the SEO aspect is really important if you are fighting in a competitive field with big players, and the number of pageviews matters only when you start heavy monetization… but for smaller blogs is far more important having an active user base.
To this advantages, I’d like to add something else:
When a new visitor visits to your homepage, if you are using excerpts he can easily see the title and first lines of a few posts, and he can quickly understand what you’re blogging about and how you approach the topic of your blog.
The keyword here is quickly: most visits are less than 20 seconds long… (think about how easy is just to “stumble” to the next page), so you need to communicate quickly what you’re talking about to catch the visitor attention as fast as you can.
This is strictly related to the previous one: showing your visitors more posts allow a quicker scanning of your frontpage, and make it easier for them to find something interesting. (This can really make the difference if you blog about various topics).
This blog is about blogging and www social things, but I have developed some wordpress plugins…
Let’s say you are a blogger using drupal, there’s no reason why I should force you to scroll the for 4 seconds throught the entire post titled Category Cloud Wordpress plugin only to reach the post you’re intrested in! (e.g. Economist.com Is Wasting Money In A Broken AdWords Campaign)
There are two main drawbacks I see for using post excerpts
The first one is more a matter of look and feel: most blogs have full posts on the homepage, so users are used to that, and they somehow expect a precise structure from a blog, including full posts on the homepage.
Differentiation can be a good thing, but you have to be aware you’re doing something different from the other blogs. (Well, it’s nothing revolutionary, but you should think about it).
The second one is not a small drawback, because it may impact your loyal readers: they already know what you’ve talked about before, and they know they’ll be interested in what you have to say today, but you force them to do one extra click every day.
There’s one last thing you should consider in my opinion: the Feed Factor.
You probably want your readers to subscribe to your rss feed.
For your subscribers it does not matter if you use full posts or excerpts in your frontpage, as they will access your (full?) content through their feed reader, and jump to the post page to read and post comments.
Basically your subscribers will never see your homepage again. (well, sort of…)
In my opinion, using post excerpts is the right choice for almost every blog.
For someone to be harmed by post excerpt he must be:
In my opinion, this is a small percentage of your visitors, and while you may give them a small nuisance, you’re giving the others a better service and a more usable website.
Now, I’d like to hear from you what are your thought about this topic.
What have I missed?
What do you think about my analysis?
As a reader, do you prefer to have full posts on the homepage? (I can change the layout of the blog, if you want ;) )

Francesco,
I agree with the points you’ve made. Just visited your blog for the first time and I love having the freedom to quickly scan through the material and see what you normally blog about.
Just subscribed to your feed as well. :)
I don’t mind excerpts on the front page, as long as the feed has the full post. I rarely stay subscribed to partial feeds for long.
Maki,
I’m happy you agree with me… And also to have you amongst my subscribers :)
Dosh Dosh is a great resource, keep on the good work!
Kevin,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
You’re a great example of my “feed factor”: providing full text feed adds great value to blogs, allows user to directly access the content and allows you to tweak your homepage for new and casual visitors.
( If you are intrested, you may have a look at my Full Feeds or Partial Feeds article. )
I always have been against post excerpts for a combination of the points you’ve made, but I admit that the mainstream adoption of rss feeds - well, at least among techies… the vast majority of my friends still don’t know what a blog is, let alone rss feeds :-( - has changed the way I perceive this issue.
You are right in saying that excerpts don’t impact at all regular subscribers, while potentially attracting casual visitors. Thanks to Google analytics I recently learnt (to my amazement!) that 50% of my page views come from passers-by, so I might switch to post excerpts in the near future.
I predict lots of curses from the small but significant percentage of my readers (my SO, for example, which is significant by definition ;-) who reads me regularly but doesn’t bother to use feeds, and who will be blessed with an extra click to read the same boring stuff. Life is harsh, sometimes :-)
Well, I’m still thinking about this, but as I said while commenting the article by daniel, I think we -as bloggers- should push our readers towards the adoption of what we think is the best possible configuration to explore the blogosphere, i.e. feed reader + browser.
If our readers don’t like post excerpt on the homepage, we have a grat opportunity to show them how easy is to use netvibes as their homepage.
By not pushing them towards the adoption of this technologies, we’re denying them the opportunity to get the most out of our blogs… and that’s not fair.
[…] question that has plagued many a blogger. About 25% of the blogs I read go the excerpt route and Mapelli makes some compelling arguments in favour of this […]
I have recently stated to put “teasers” on my homepage. I was swayed by Chris Pearson on his Cutline 1.1 website, where he encourages partial posts on the front page. He suggests that it puts visitors in a “clicking” mentality, which is an interesting take.
Anyhow, my question is this: When I put the tag on my post, it also makes my RSS feed partial! There is a warning on the “options” page that this will happen even if you check “full feeds”. What is the workaround to this problem? I want teasers on the homepage, but I want a full feed to arrive for any subscribers.
there is a plugin you may be interested in, it is called Full Text Feed … it’s easy to guess what it does ;)
I hadn’t tried it yet, because I hacked directly my wordpress source files, but it should work :)
Thank you very much, Francesco.

A disadvantage: Links and images won’t show up.
Baris,
Using post excerpts does not mean using the summary of the posts…
You can use the <!–more–> tag (as I do on this site) and still have links and images ;)
Oh, OK, sorry :) I use more too, and as you say, it works. Sorry ’bout the misunderstanding :)
I also give my readers a FULL RSS feed, so I think I’ll put from now on only excerpts on my home page :)
I think it’s better after reading this
We’ve recently been toying with the idea of placing excerpts of our news posts on our store home page. Having read this we are now going to implement it. Thanks for the great advice.
I always preferred full posts on home page and excerpts in archives and categories, if for nothing else than to avoid duplicate content.
You have a very good point here. But I like to read simple post and not too long. I’m not novel reader so post than can be divide into sub post is great.
Hi all,
I have a Blogger blog and I really want to do post excerpts as I think they’re great and would suit my site. I am using a template called Mr. Moto. I have read the instruction from bloggers on how to do excerpts, but it asks me to put little bits of HTML code into precise parts of the template. Unfortunately, these parts are simply not there in the template I am using.
Is there a universal way of creating excerpts, something that works on every template?
My blog is http://www.lightsquash.com if it’s at all relevant.
Thanks for your time,
Diego
Yeah, we should do post exchange!
I am very new at posting blogs and I’m finding any tips I can to bring readers to my page. I found this to be very insightful. Thanks. I hope you will visit my page as well.
As you say, post excerpts are great for SEO but not so great for usability.
